This French Bread has such a nice, soft texture and makes the perfect amount for a small household. It is an easy recipe and I always use instant yeast because for the life of me, I cannot get regular yeast to work for me. For me, instant yeast is fool proof as long as you use it with warm water.
French Bread
Ingredients
- 1 ⅛ c warm water
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- ¾ Tbsp instant yeast
- ¾ Tbsp salt
- 1 Tbsp oil
- 2 ½ – 3 c flour
Instructions
- Add warm water, sugar, instant yeast, salt, and oil to a mixing bowl. Stir together the ingredients until combined.
- Add 2 ½ c of flour and mix using a dough hook or wooden spoon. Gradually add more flour to your dough until it is wet to the touch but no longer sticking to your fingers.
- Oil a bowl, place dough into the bowl and coat it with the oil from the bowl.
- Cover the bowl with a towel, place in a warm spot, and let the dough ball raise for an hour or until the ball is doubled in size.
- Once the dough is doubled in size, take it out of the bowl and place on an oiled surface.
- Cut the ball in half and form each half into a long loaf. Once the loaves are formed, place them on a greased baking sheet or silicone mat, cut diagonal slits all the way down the tops of the loaves.
- Lightly brush the loaves with oil and cover again until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F so that it is ready when loaves have doubled.
- Once the loaves have doubled in size, bake for 25 minutes until the loaves are golden brown.
- Brush the loaves with olive oil or butter to soften the sides and add taste.
- Serve loaves warm with your favorite spreads.

Notes
Toppings: this goes great with homemade jams, butter, olive oil and herb dip, garlic butter, etc.
Pairings: this is a great bread to go with most soups, olive oil dip, as garlic bread, pasta dishes, or just by itself.
Tips: as you can see in the pictures, my loaves were not perfectly formed, but that is a staple of homemade cooking, the taste is still amazing!
When you are mixing flour into the dough, make sure to add it gradually after the two and a half cups have been added. You don’t want to add too much flour and make your dough too dry, it is done when it is just soft and moist to the touch but not sticking to your fingers. I generally stop adding flour as soon as the dough no longer sticks to my fingers.
